This April, Trent Radio launches the third year of Fundrai$io — its week-long, slightly cheeky, entirely necessary fundraiser celebrating the scrappy miracle of community radio. Running Sunday, April 12 through Saturday, April 18, the annual push brings together volunteers, programmers, and supporters to rally around Peterborough’s beloved 92.7 FM, the CRTC-licensed broadcast station and registered charity that has long served as a home for analogue radio, independent voices, and community-minded broadcasting.
This year, they’re adding a new twist to the fundraising arsenal: an online 50/50 raffle. Hosted through Rafflebox, the raffle gives supporters a chance to buy tickets in support of Trent Radio’s ongoing mission — preserving producer-driven radio and creating educational opportunities in broadcasting and communication arts. Tickets are on sale now, with the draw set to take place live on air from Trent Radio House on Saturday, April 18 at 8 p.m.
But Fundrai$io isn’t just about passing the hat. The week also promises a mix of special programming, in-person events, and the kind of grassroots energy that makes community radio feel less like media and more like a living organism. Among the highlights: a Radio Cabaret planned for Friday, April 17 at The Theatre on King, which will kick off Trent Radio’s 24-hour radio marathon.
“Currently we have a Radio Cabaret in the works for Friday April 17th at local blackbox theatre — The Theatre On King — that will kick off our 24 hour radio marathon,” says Rob Hailman, Trent Radio’s Director of Operations. “Each year our radio community is excited to get involved and animate the incredible events and programming that take place during Fundrai$io — and I can’t wait to hear what they come up with this year.”
Trent Radio is also calling on local businesses to join the cause as sponsors. “Our Fundrai$io sponsors are an incredibly important part of our big radio family community,” says Jill Staveley, Director of Programming. Whether through financial support or donated services, those partnerships help the station meet its fundraising goals and keep the whole thing humming.
For those who prefer the straight donation route, supporters can also contribute through Canada Helps, with charitable tax receipts issued for online donations and for cash or cheque donations over $25 made directly to Trent Radio.
In other words: if you like the idea of local radio remaining local, weird, independent, and alive, this is the week to put your money where your dial is.
