Twelfth Night, or What You Will

Viola, a young woman of refinement, finds herself stranded on the coast of Illyria after a shipwreck she’s sure has claimed her brother. In desperate need of safety, she decides to dress as a young man, Cesario, and enters the service of Duke Orsino. She promptly falls for him, but of course, can’t tell him she’s swooning because, well, she’s pretending to be a guy. Meanwhile, Orsino is busy mooning over the lovely Countess Olivia, who’s not at all interested, as she’s too busy grieving her dead brother and father. Undeterred, Orsino sends Cesario to woo Olivia for him, but surprise! Olivia falls for Cesario instead, because why wouldn’t she fall for the charming servant with the mysterious boyish allure?

As this romantic chaos unfolds, Olivia’s uncle, Toby, has invited the rich but dim Sir Andrew over to drink, carouse, and generally make a mess while the lady of the house hides away. Only the uptight Malvolio seems to care about keeping things in order, leading to a hilarious scheme to humiliate him. And hovering above it all is Feste, the jester, whose clever quips and poignant songs expose the desires, delusions, and madness that grip everyone in Illyria. Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night is a comedic, heart-wrenching ride through love, grief, and all the messy feelings in between—proving we often laugh because, if we didn’t, we’d probably just cry.
