June 26 – October 6, 2024
Art Gallery of Peterborough
This exhibition marks the culmination of the 2023/24 Youth Art Mentorship Program, now in its third year. The program offers young artists at the end of their high school careers the invaluable opportunity to collaborate with an artist-mentor, culminating in an exhibition at the Art Gallery of Peterborough.
Selected by a jury of arts professionals in late 2023, artists Masinjah Aloh, Ruby Carbert, Annabelle Diamond, Artemis Lishman, and Jace McIntyre have dedicated the past four months to working with artist-mentor Dr. Spencer J. Harrison, Education Programming Coordinator Andrew Ihamaki, and Curator Fynn Leitch. Each artist has brought forth a unique perspective, deeply informed by their personal experiences.
Figuring Identity: Declarations and Dreams showcases paintings and sculptural works that explore themes of origin, aspiration, and present experience. This exhibition masterfully blends fantasy and reality, documenting the process of mapping identity and creating space for envisioned futures. The ways we inhabit, shape, and adorn our bodies empower us to navigate the world with vibrancy, stealth, gentility, or assertion. Through a range of mark-making and material manipulations, from the raw and visceral to the soft and delicate, these works resonate with conviction and clarity.
