BRENT BUTT: FROM SMALL-TOWN CLASS CLOWN TO CANADIAN COMEDY KING
Born in the bustling metropolis of Tisdale, Saskatchewan (population: not many), Brent Butt figured out early on that being funny was a great way to get attention—and possibly out of trouble. He honed his skills in school, and at 20, packed up his punchlines and moved to the big city to try his luck in stand-up. Turns out, he was pretty good at it. Within months, he was headlining top comedy clubs in Toronto, and before long, he was touring internationally and cracking jokes at major festivals.
But stand-up was just the beginning. Brent soon became a TV staple with his comedy specials, cementing his status as one of the funniest people in the country. Not content with just being on TV, he decided to create it—thus, Corner Gas was born. The sitcom became an instant smash, earning sky-high ratings, an International Emmy nomination, and even being crowned “Funniest Show on TV” by TV Guide readers. Corner Gas soon spread beyond Canada’s borders, delighting audiences in 26 countries, including the U.S. The show’s final episode shattered records as the highest-rated Canadian scripted series finale ever.
Brent kept the laughs coming with Hiccups, his two-season follow-up, and in 2013, he was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal—because even royalty appreciates a good joke. That same year, he dipped his toe into the film world, writing, starring in, and producing the comedy-thriller No Clue under his Sparrow Media banner. Then, in 2014, Brent brought fans back to Dog River with Corner Gas: The Movie, which proved that you can, in fact, go home again—especially if there’s a Golden Screen Award waiting for you at the 2016 Canadian Screen Awards.
Never one to leave a good thing alone, Brent reimagined Corner Gas in animated form, launching Corner Gas: Animated in 2018. The series became the highest-rated show in The Comedy Network’s history and a hit on Crave TV, eventually making its way to the U.S. via Amazon’s free streaming service, IMDb TV (because even Americans needed more gas). The show picked up multiple Canadian Screen and Leo Awards before wrapping up its fourth and final season.
Most recently, Brent proved he’s not just a comedy guy—he’s also a best-selling author. His debut novel, HUGE, shot straight to #1 on the Canadian Fiction Bestseller list and shows no signs of leaving the top ten.
With Brent performing, writing, executive producing, and even directing, one thing is clear: he’s not slowing down anytime soon. And Canada’s comedy scene is all the better for it.
